DUBAI — Dubai Municipality has begun using artificial intelligence to test the quality of household water across the emirate, allowing harmful bacteria such as Legionella and E. coli to be detected far more quickly than with conventional laboratory methods.
Run through the Dubai Central Laboratory, the upgraded service is designed for the early and accurate detection of bacterial contamination, with results issued electronically to ensure reliability and allow immediate action where a problem is found.
The scope of testing has been widened to cover a range of domestic and recreational water sources, including storage tanks, taps, swimming pools and non-bottled drinking water. The municipality said the broader coverage enables potential waterborne contaminants to be identified and contained early, helping prevent illness and reinforcing public confidence in the safety of Dubai's living environment.
Hind Mahmoud Ahmed, Director of the Dubai Central Laboratory Department, said the technology adds a proactive layer of protection for the community. “Dubai Municipality continues to use advanced technologies and artificial intelligence to deliver laboratory solutions that strengthen proactive protection against public health risks,” she said.
Alongside speed, the municipality said the adoption of advanced technologies had improved operational efficiency by significantly reducing laboratory testing times, a meaningful gain in a field where bacterial culture has traditionally required days of incubation.
The service supports key sectors across the emirate, including residential, hospitality, recreational and public facilities, by helping maintain high standards of water quality and safety. The municipality said it also reinforces Dubai's position as a hub for advanced laboratory testing and calibration services, and as a safe, trusted city for residents, visitors and tourists.
